Dear St. Lucy School Families,
My name is Helen May and I am the President of the Home and School Association. I would like to welcome back all our returning students and families, and extend a warm "St. Lucy" welcome to our new families. If you’re anything like me, you have mixed feelings about starting a new year… wondering where summer went and why you’re so tired even though you still have a dozen items left on your list of "fun things to do over the summer".
Well, ready or not, the 2011-2012 school year is here! Already, I find myself caught up in the excitement of searching for sales on school supplies and counting the hours until I have my house to myself and someone else to make lunch for the kids. I know for a fact that the St. Lucy teachers and staff have been busy preparing for a new year, planning lessons, setting up new classrooms, finding new ways to make existing classrooms educational and fun, learning new tricks for the Smartboard, or how to make the best of those Netbooks. There are so many activities offered during and after school, that are aimed at getting to know others, and helping our children succeed, both in the classroom and in life, that really set St. Lucy apart. Please follow the weekly newsletter, or visit the school website (www.stlucysschool.com) which lists them all.
My husband, Dan and I have 4 kids here at St. Lucy, from 1st through 6th grade, and the one piece of advice I can give is GET INVOLVED! Want to get to know more hard-working parents and families at St. Lucy’s? Attend a Home & School meeting, become a mentor to new families, work with others on the Auction Committee, help with concessions during the Volleyball or Basketball tournaments, join in the fun and meet someone new at one of our Family Nights… be it the Fall Festival, Games with Grown-ups, the Auction, working side-by-side is the best way to get to know someone new.
Want to see your children "in action" and get to know their friends and teachers better? Try working in the lunchroom, be a room parent, help with Fun Day, Science Olympiad, Battle of the Books, tutoring, or just attending a daily mass (Wed/Fri) with your kids. You’d be surprised how delighted even the 8th grades are (although they do their best to hide it) when their parents are involved. It builds up their confidence, and helps you understand the daily routine, the challenges teachers and students face each day. Working full time? Offer to host even one of the room parties, attend a field trip, or ask the teacher if you can come in one day and explain a little about "your world, your hobbies, your faith, your job"… your kid won’t forget it!
No system is flawless, and St. Lucy School is always looking for ways to improve. If you simply have a question, are upset about something, or see an opportunity for improvement or growth, I beg you to speak up. Don’t wait for someone else. Don’t let it fester or resign yourself to believing that anything is set in stone, or can’t be changed. St. Lucy prides itself on being progressive, and we have a tremendous school history and supportive principal, pastor and parish that want our school to succeed. I’d be glad to take any emails or phone calls to help answer questions, resolve issues or listen to suggestions. I can be contacted at 262-598-1754, or via email at helentmay@gmail.com.
We have a GREAT Home and School Committee that is willing to help as well…. and plenty of jobs still available. They will be elected and introduced at the Fall Home and School Meeting on September 20th. Let’s all get involved, and make this the best year yet!
Sincerely,
Helen May
